Romance at a Glance Reviews The Hunter by L.J. Shen

Aka some of the best smut we’ve read

Hey friends! If you missed our interview with L.J., check it out here! We had SOOO much fun talking with her.

We read a bunch of L.J’s books before interviewing her (you can check out some of our reviews on Patreon), and this was definitely not our favorite, but as Shani said, L.J. can write the shit outta sex scenes!!

Some major points we discussed:

  • Our feelings about the “lose control of my mind because of the dick” trope

  • The ages of the characters and how L.J made them more interesting than “college” aged kids

  • The SEX

  • Hawt sex

  • Sailor’s archery career and dreams for the Olympics

  • Hunter’s family dynamics & them calling him home and threatening to disown him

  • Sailor’s family!

  • The buildup of their sex scenes

On Romance at a Glance, we discuss and review all genres of romance novels, as well as get into the nitty-gritty of real-life romance, relationships, and sex... while cracking each other up. Expect some spontaneous singing, funny anecdotes, honest reviews, and naughty language.

Quick Guide Review of the Book and Notes

Book Title: The Hunter

Author: L.J. Shen

Audio Narrator: Virginia Rose, Jason Clarke

Part of a Series: Yes - book #1 of the Boston Belles

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Cover Art:

Shani: I like it, It describes what I got.

Bridget: Here for it! I appreciate that it is an actual human being. We’ve been seeing and reading so many illustrated covers for a contemporary romance that this felt like a fresh shot of sex appeal. Love the abs, the hair, the posture.

Synopsis: Hunter is a playboy with no plan. He makes an accidental sex tape banging 5 women and overnight, his billionaire tycoon daddy cracks the whip and sends him home, to be babysat by Sailor, Boston’s nerdiest girl alive who loves archery and has a mob killer for a father.

Sailor has no interest in watching over Hunter to ensure his sobriety and celibacy, but can’t pass up the opportunity to get media exposure for her Olympic archery dreams and out of her parent's house, who she refuses to take money from (their legitimate businesses unless proven otherwise).

Enemies to lovers, opposites attract and it turns out, arranged relationship by their parents.

Heroine Rating: Sailor

Shani: 🍑🍑🍑

Bridget: 🍑🍑🍑 I liked her. Not my favorite trope that she can’t control herself around him, but I liked her, I liked her dynamic with her family, I liked that she stood up to her dad and coach and Lana (eventually). I liked that she shot at him.

Hero Rating: Hunter

Shani: 🍆🍆

Bridget: 🍆🍆🍆 At the beginning of the book (and I get why there are so many 1 star and DNF reads) I would have said 1 or 2 stars. But overall - with the last 30 percent of the book he actually becomes worthy of her. So I’ll give him a 3. He can eat pussy like a champ which I appreciate and eventually realizes Sailor is the whole package and he’ll do anything to be with her. I wish it happened earlier.

McDreamy to Mc Steamy:

Shani: McHunt Me

Bridget: McNasty McFuckboy Mc Chauvinist

Classy to Nasty:

Shani would argue this book was kinky. Bridget thinks it was more primal and vanilla. Except maybe the multiples at the beginning.

Favorite Review:

Bridget’s from Goodreads:

Vaishali - 3.5 stars

I don’t know where to start from or if I can even review this, before starting this book I read so many negative comments that I didn’t really expect anything from it so maybe that is the reason that I don’t think it was that bad, but yes I can see what didn’t work for people.

I always like LJ Shen’s book for her dialogues but most of the things that came out from hunter’s mouth were too much, it’s one thing to have a potty mouth or relate everything to sex but the first few chapters in hunter’s pov were really disgusting to a point that for a minute I thought of not finishing the book, but only for a minute.

Then the scenes, did LJ Shen start watching bollywood movies all of a sudden? because some of the scenes felt too filmy and overdramatised, I mean that scene in the bar..Who does that? That guy started talking shit about Sailor for literally no reason, and then when she went to save Hunt another guy started lecturing her about how hunter should handle this on his own for his own good. Yeah that scene was funny and stupid.

BUTTT the book was actually not bad. I mean we had Troy, Sparrow, Sam and Vicious’ one scene too so that made it more worth reading, but Hunter and Sailor as main characters were not very much intriguing. And I think I half fell in love with that hot jerk Cillian. Literally can’t wait for the next book to come!!

Also as much as I love Vicious and friends and kids, for me Boston is a nice change from Todos Santos.

Worth the Read?

Shani: 3 stars! YES. FOR the Dominant Style primal energy baby! The story itself was meh. Just a vehicle for delicious smut!

Bridget: Yes, if you like New adult and some angst. Then I say yes. There are a lot of positive reviews. That said, I’m reading her other book Pretty Reckless at the moment and pulled into that one way more, which is in High School and has a LOT of juicy drama happening. I think this may be a lot of people’s catnip. But if you don’t enjoy this age group then probably not a good choice, and you may want to check out Vicious and their parent’s series.
