Romance at a Glance Reviews Lover Revealed by J.R. Ward

ALSO KNOWN AS BUTCH AND MARISSA’S BOOK

So dear listeners, we were definitely not remembering this book the way it happened! I (Bridget) ended up liking it SOOO much more than I thought I was going to, and Shani ended up liking it a lot less.

I was pleasantly surprised by Marissa’s arc in this book, I loved that she grew a backbone and started standing up for herself and figuring out what she wanted.

Shani definitely thought this book was a building block and as you can see below or hear in the episode, she thought he was being a little whiney bitch a lot of the time.

Some other notable moments from this book we get into during the podcast review! [spoilers ahead!]

  • Z chasing Bella in a sexual heat kinda way (FANS SELF REPEATEDLY)

  • Marissa burning hundreds of thousands of dollars of clothes

  • All the thruple vibes from V and Butch and Marissa

  • John Matthew’s reaction to seeing the naked Chosen Layla!

  • Butch’s induction into the Brotherhood

On Romance at a Glance, we discuss and review all genres of romance novels, as well as get into the nitty-gritty of real-life romance, relationships, and sex... while cracking each other up. Expect some spontaneous singing, funny anecdotes, honest reviews, and naughty language.

Quick Guide Review of the Book and Notes

Book Title: Lover Revealed

Author: J.R. Ward

Audio Narrator: Jim Frangione

Part of a Series: Yes, Book 4 of the Black Dagger Brotherhood

Genre: Paranormal Romance! Vampires for life. Nothing hotter than an animalistic need to consume your blood, feed you and bond with you.

Synopsis: Butch O'Neal is a fighter by nature. A hard-living ex-homicide cop, he's the only human ever to be allowed in the inner circle of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. And he wants to go even deeper into the vampire world—to engage in the turf war with the lessers. He's got nothing to lose. His heart belongs to a female vampire, an aristocratic beauty who's way out of his league. If he can't have Marissa, then at least he can fight side by side with the Brothers...

Fate curses him with the very thing he wants. When Butch sacrifices himself to save a civilian vampire from the slayers, he falls prey to the darkest force in the war. Left for dead, he's found by a miracle, and the Brotherhood calls on Marissa to bring him back. But even her love may not be enough to save him...

Favorite Review:

Shani’s from Audible:

Wendy gave it 3 outta 5 stars.

 Hmmm... Streeeeeetch!

My least favorite of the series, but still a worthy listen. My main issue with this book is that up until now, the world Ward has created, and the laws within that world have been established. This book seems to stretch those laws - a lot! I mean, we are reading fiction, so not everything needs to be plausible in real life, but in the world of the books, this book forces the reader to be flexible with what the author wants us to believe. I get why she did it - but... (this is where I have to let it go and give the author authority over her own story).

Having said that, good book! I love, love, love the interaction between Beth and Marissa. So nice to see an author who doesn't make female characters either man-hating BFFs or so catty you want to kill them both. Wards women are beautifully written with true wisdom and stength of character. Both Butch and Marissa are learning how to be who they really are. And like most people, they screw it up along the way. They have a slow start, they fumble the ball a lot - they struggle to understand each other - the first time they have sex, well ... This book is more "human", which in itself made it an interesting read compared the first 3 books.

And of course, as we move through the series the plot thickens and the "big bad" is getting bigger and badder. I can't wait to get to Vs story!!! Jim - I luv ya Jim. (for complete review of Jim, see my previous reviews).

Bridget’s from Goodreads:

Bev rated it 5 stars

Well colour me surprised! I wasn't too fussed on reading Butch's book, after all he was just a cop and Marissa had come across as rather bland although I did feel for what she went through. Then I started and and couldn't put it down and ended up absolutely falling hook, line and sinker for Butch. He's definitely my favourite so far. Loved him! His snark, dry humour, loyalty and commitment to his new brothers reeled me in.

Cover Art:

Shani: I wish I could tell them apart better. It’s hard to remember which brother is featured in which book.

Bridget: Same same. Nothing ever wrong with two people whose mouths are slightly parted as he’s about to kiss the neck she is offering him though!

Worth the Read?

Shani: meh but pivotal

Bridget: Yesss
