Shani: McSteamy, but sometimes I thought he was a little bitch.

Bridget: McSteamy, so fun having some kink in this historical romance! Plus, he wanted to be submissive, which is very unusual for historical and I was alllll for.

Classy to Nasty:

Definitely veering into the nasty territory! We both thought it had very enjoyable kink and bdsm.

In this episode, we reviewed the debut novel from Scarlett Peckham "The Duke I Tempted". A historical romance novel with some kink! The book was the winner of the Golden Heart from the Romance Writerโ€™s of America, a contest for the best unpublished work of romance! Based off that, she got her book published, and boy are we happy that she did. Listen to us debate the benefits of combining kink into historical romance, as well as our love for Scarlett's writing style.

We are heading to meet Scarlett on Bookstore Romance Day on August 17th at Creating Conversations, A Galaxy Partner, in Redondo Beach!

Quick Guide Review of the Book and Notes

Book Title: The Duke I Tempted

Author: Scarlett Peckham

Audio Narrator: Holly Chandler

Part of a Series: Yes - The Secrets of Charlotte Street

Genre: Historical Romance

Synopsis:

Heโ€™s controlled. Meticulous. Immaculate. No one would expect the proper Duke of Westmead to be a member of Londonโ€™s most illicit secret club. Least of all: his future wife. Having overcome financial ruin and redeemed his family name to become the most legendary investor in London, the Duke of Westmead needs to secure his holdings by producing an heir. Which means he must find a wife who wonโ€™t discover his secret craving to spend his nights on his knees - or make demands on his long scarred-over heart.

Poppy Cavendish is not that type of woman. An ambitious self-taught botanist designing the garden ballroom in which Westmead plans to woo a bride, Poppy has struggled against convention all her life to secure her hard-won independence. She wants the capital to expand her exotic nursery business - not a husband. But there is something so compelling about Westmead, with his starchy bearing and impossibly kind eyes - that when an accidental scandal makes marriage to the duke the only means to save her nursery, Poppy worries she wants more than the title he is offering. The arrangement is meant to be just business. A greenhouse for an heir. But Poppy yearns to unravel her husbandโ€™s secrets - and to tempt the duke to risk his heart.

Heroine Rating: Poppy

Shani: ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ | She was strong and independent

Bridget: ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ | I LOVED that she was all about the business and to her regret just had to marry the guy who it turned out was her match.

Hero Rating: Duke of Westmead

Shani:๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ† | He was hot and controlled, but turned me off when he lost it.

Bridget: ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†.5 eggplants | I liked that he properly groveled to her after being a giant butthead, and that he wanted her to come more than he wanted to come.

McDreamy to Mc Steamy:

Shani: McSteamy, but sometimes I thought he was a little bitch.

Bridget: McSteamy, so fun having some kink in this historical romance! Plus, he wanted to be submissive, which is very unusual for historical and I was alllll for.

Classy to Nasty:

Definitely veering into the nasty territory! We both thought it had very enjoyable kink and bdsm.

A Skimmers Guide to the Cookies and the Nookie:

It begins in Audible Chapter 11.

Favorite Line in the Book:

Shani:

โ€œScandal bloomsโ€ฆ Whispers have it that it is the elegant figure off the beou mon botinist herself that has caught the eye of the duke of westlake. The duke began the first dance with his garden nymph in arm and if roving eyes can be trusted he may have ended the night with her as well.โ€

Bridget: (has 2 naturally)

โ€œThe actual answer was too vulgar to disclose to a person who would never be able to understand the endless concessions one must make as a woman living in the world of men. How one must resign oneself to the ever-porous line between friend and foe, weigh expediency against principle.โ€

โ€œGiven I rebuked you for your lack of transparency, honor obliges I disclose to you that I became rather dismayed when I learned you were betrothed to Raridan. I suppose I though, How dare she? How dare she squander such gifts on so middling a creature? Or more to the point, on anyone?โ€

Favorite Review:

Shaniโ€™s from Audible:

The Wrong Reader .

An affected American Accent? Why? Wrong country, wrong class, wrong century. The story began well but the accent was too much of an anachronism.

Bridgetโ€™s from Goodreads:

Corinne Michaels rated 5 stars - it it was amazing

Wow. Wow. Wow.

I read this book on the recommendation of Sierra Simone and I was obsessed with the cover and blurb. I absolutely loved it. The writing was flawless and the way she handled the hero was brilliant.

I devoured every word as the story was unraveled bit by bit. For those who love historical and want a bit of an edge, this is the perfect book.

Cover Art:

Shani: Itโ€™s beautiful, love a good back and the flowers, but doesnโ€™t tell me about the book.

Bridget: It really got me in the mood of the historical genre of the book. And I thought having her upper back and neck exposed gives it a bit of sexual intrigue. I like how it also is very heroine first. The title I think is a bit misleading after looking back on it. Since she doesnโ€™t really Tempt him in the classic definition of the word. Or at least not tempt him on purpose.

Worth the Read?

Shani: YES!

Bridget: YES!
