Romance at a Glance Reviews The Earl I Ruined by Scarlett Peckham

If you already listened to our review of The Duke I Tempted, the first book in this series, you probably can guess that we are still loving this author and series. Shani loves nothing more than some historical romance and some excellently written sex scenes, and Bridget was here for the quippy dialogue, strong heroine, unrequited love on both sides and of course, the nookie.

Listen as we laugh over some of the best moments in the book and talk about some of our own ideas around BDSM and kink in real life, and in novels.

On Romance at a Glance, we discuss and review all genres of romance novels, as well as get into the nitty-gritty of real-life romance, relationships, and sex... while cracking each other up. Expect some spontaneous singing, funny anecdotes, honest reviews, and naughty language.

Quick Guide Review of the Book and Notes

Book Title: The Earl I Ruined

Author: Scarlett Peckham

Audio Narrator: Saskia Maarleveld, Moira Quirk

Part of a Series: Yes, The Secrets of Charlotte Street

Genre: Historical Romance (with kink!)

Synopsis:

She’s beautiful, rich, and reckless. When Lady Constance Stonewell accidentally ruins the Earl of Apthorp’s entire future with her gossip column, she does what any honorable young lady must: offer her hand in marriage. Or, at the very least, stage a whirlwind fake engagement to repair his reputation. Never mind that it means spending a month with the dullest man in England. Or the fact that he disapproves of everything she holds dear. He’s supposedly the most boring politician in the House of Lords.

Julian Haywood, the Earl of Apthorp, is on the cusp of finally proving himself to be the man he’s always wanted to be when his future is destroyed in a single afternoon. When the woman he’s secretly in love with confesses she’s at fault, it isn’t just his life that is shattered: it’s his heart. They have a month to clear his name and convince society they are madly in love. But when Constance discovers her faux-intended is decidedly more than meets the eye, not to mention adept at shocking forms of wickedness, she finds herself falling for him. There’s only one problem: he can’t forgive her for breaking his heart.

Heroine Rating: Constance

Shani: 🍑🍑🍑🍑🍑 She was strong and independent.

Bridget: 🍑🍑🍑🍑 I definitely liked her, not as much as Poppy from the previous Charlotte Street book, but I didn’t love her as much as 5 peach booties!!

Hero Rating: Julian

Shani: 🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆 He’s a hoe and I love it.

Bridget: 🍆🍆🍆🍆 He was a butthead who kept making the same judgments about her, even at the very end. He did redeem himself in the end, but lost an eggplant for sheer stupidity!

McDreamy to Mc Steamy:

Shani: McSteamy

Bridget: McSteamy underneath his courtly exterior.

Classy to Nasty:

Some kinky bdsm in this historical romance! Along with a little vanilla passion.

Favorite Line in the Book:

Shani:

Julian I can’t stop thinking about you, about that day in your house with the ties…..

Bridget: Naturally has two!

She rolled her eyes. “Apthorp, my dear, fretting about what is appropriate between us now is like worrying one does not have one’s parasol whilst drowning in the ocean.”

“I don’t have an affliction. I am perfectly capable of regulating my desires. But Constance?”

“Yes?”

“Don’t call them unnatural until you try them.”

Favorite Review:

Shani’s from Audible:

Maugham 3.0 out of 5 stars

I loved the first in this series, and there’s a lot to like about this one as well - great characters, a feminist sensibility, a good deal of fun alongside angst and tortured pining. But for me the central conflict between protagonists was dealt with poorly - stops and starts and moments where it seemed ignored only to suddenly reappear - and although this series is certainly at the fanciful end of historical fiction, for me the latter 75% devolved into absolute farce, combined with unnecessary extra conflict. A shame given the many other strengths. I will read the next one in the series but if you’ve not started any, definitely try book one first.

Bridget’s from Goodreads:

Natasha is a Book Junkie 5 stars

I have been breathlessly recommending Scarlett Peckham’s writing from the moment I first discovered her magnificent prose in The Duke I Tempted, and I’ve been eagerly awaiting her second novel ever since. A mix of tropes that are essentially my catnip—a marriage of convenience between two people who appear to hate one another, with an unrequited love twist thrown in to up the angst—this Regency-era romance continues the Secrets of Charlotte Street series with a story that is so much more than the sum of its tropes. Brimming with emotion, passion, and plenty of pining, Scarlett Peckham’s latest offering is a touching portrayal of two people finding out what they mean to themselves and to each other by pretending to be something they are not. It’s by far one of my favourite reads of the year.

Cover Art:

Shani: It’s beautiful, love a good back and the flowers, but doesn’t tell me about the book. And the flowers made sense for poppy but not Constance.

Bridget: Got the historical vibe, and it is very pretty and she looks like a heroine after my heart, but like Shani said, it didn’t give me a peek into her character… maybe she could have been holding a newspaper or something?

Worth the Read?

Shani: YES!

Bridget: Yes!
